Local Medical Committees

What is a local medical committee (LMC)?

LMCs are local representative committees of NHS GPs and represent their interests in their localities to the NHS health authorities.

They interact and work with – and through – the General Practitioners Committee as well as other branch of practice committees and local specialist medical committees in various ways, including conferences.

LMCs are not regional BMA offices. If you wish to contact the BMA regional office please contact us or phone 0300 123 1233 .

LMC negotiation training

The BMA have organised negotiation skills training for LMCs, which will be provided by the BMA member relations team, and funded by the GPDF.

This will be a one-day course on how to develop negotiating skills that will enable participants to become an effective and successful negotiator.

The aim of the course is to enable understanding of different types of negotiating principles, identifying the different phases of negotiation, recognising the habits of success, understanding the importance of preparation as well as recognising ways to handle breakdowns.

There are 20 events planned across England, which are free to attend for all LMC members, paid for by the GPDF. Note that travel expenses will not be covered by GPDF, although lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Sessional GPs and LMCs

The BMA has produced guidance to address the under-representation of sessional GPs on local medical LMCs and to encourage communication and engagement between GPs and LMCs.

Despite a willingness to encourage sessional GPs and LMCs to engage with each other, there has been a lack of progress. Frustrations are clearly felt on both sides.
