Coventry consultant anaesthetist Mark Porter has been chosen as BMA council chair.
Dr Porter said the council’s work on pensions had shown how effectively it could work together as a team and said to continue this effective leadership he needed the council’s ‘passion, your advice and most of all your membership of the team’.
Dr Porter also said: ‘I have an unconditional belief in the importance of the NHS to doctors, to patients and to society.’
He was elected by the BMA council in a three-way contest at the BMA annual representative meeting in Bournemouth today.
Dr Porter takes over from Yorkshire GP Hamish Meldrum, who served the maximum five years as chair.
