Introduction
At the BMA's 2004 ARM the following motion was passed: "That this Meeting requests that the BMA investigate the impact of new and emerging infectious hazards on the health of national and international communities."
This was discussed by members of the Board of Science on 18 November 2004. Comprehensive information on the aetiology, detection, impact and management of emerging infectious diseases is already widely available from a range of authoritative sources. The Board therefore resolved to produce this briefing paper to provide a signpost to some of the most useful existing information on emerging infectious diseases.
