BMA briefing pack for local representatives appointed to SHA clinical pathway groups
As part of the NHS Next Stage Review, in August 2007, Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) in England were instructed to set up 8 clinical pathway groups each, to look at the following areas: maternity and newborn care, children’s services, acute care, long-term conditions, staying healthy, planned care, mental health and end of life care.
Following a co-ordinated nomination process led by the BMA locally, 97 places for local BMA representatives to sit on clinical pathway groups were secured.
A BMA briefing pack (electronic) was sent to all BMA representatives, which included the following documents :
- A covering letter from the Director of Representational and Political Activities (download in PDF format 37k)
- Terms of reference of the review (download in PDF format 22k) and a letter from the Department of Health to SHAs detailing regional plans including information of the remit of the clinical pathway groups
- Local contact sheet including details of BMA regional services, Local Medical Committees, regional committees and Local Negotiating Committees
- Feedback form (download in PDF format 16k); and
- Information on expenses (download in PDF format 17k)

- the process of commissioning
- the framework for procuring support for external commissioners
- joint working between local bodies representing hospital doctors and GPs
