MMC consultation: Proposals for managing applications from medical graduates from outside the European Economic Area
Response from the British Medical Association
May 2008
The BMA recently submitted a response to the Modernising Medical Careers (MMC) consultation: Proposals for managing applications from medical graduates from outside the European Economic Area. The consultation outlined a number of proposals which the Department of Health is considering to manage applications from non-UK/EEA medical graduates.
Within its response the BMA re-stated its position that medical graduates from outside the EEA who are already in the UK and committed to working in the NHS should be free to apply for postgraduate and specialty training posts on an equal footing to UK/EEA candidates.
The response also highlights concerns that dissuading migrant doctors from coming to the UK could create staff shortages at other levels within the NHS.
