Update for doctors on work permits and the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme

Updated January 2008

From 3 April 2006, there will be important changes in Immigration rules, which will affect people applying for leave to remain, and indefinite leave to remain in the UK. Under the new rules individuals on work permits or the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme will have to have spent five years in the UK in order to qualify for indefinite leave to remain.

There are transitional arrangements in place for those who apply for indefinite leave to remain before the 3 April, even if their application is decided after this date. There are also transitional arrangements for those applying for indefinite leave to remain after 3 April having only spent four years in the country.

Further information is available on the Working in the UK website.
