? Can I still work if I am being tested for hepatitis C?

May 2003

Any health care worker who is being tested for hepatitis C will initially be tested for antibodies to the virus (unless their antibody status is already known to be positive).

If this test is positive, they will then be tested for the hepatitis C virus RNA with 2 samples taken a week apart being qualitatively assessed by an accredited laboratory.

Provided that this testing is carried out promptly, the health care worker does not need to be restricted from performing EPPs until a definite result is known.
