There is no immediate post exposure prophylaxis available for HCV exposures but early identification of the virus allows prompt anti-viral treatment. This has been demonstrated to be highly effective in preventing chronic infection.
If there is apparent exposure to hepatitis C the possibility of exposure to both hepatitis B and HIV should be considered. If there is a possibility of HIV infection anti-viral treatment should be started immediately.
