? If I am intending to continue training in a specialty that involves EPPs when should I be tested?

May 2003

All doctors wishing to work in surgical specialities (including obstetrics and gynaecology), or in accident and emergency where EPPs may need to be performed, should be tested for hepatitis C before commencing their first SHO post.

General practice trainees should be tested for hepatitis C before entering GP training if they will be performing minor surgery.

Other major specialties covered in the Department of Health’s guidance include prospective dental students, midwifery students, nurses (working in certain specialised areas) and podiatrists.
