GP trainers' grant: superannuation

April 2007

The General Practitioners Committee (GPC) has been calling for an uplift for GP trainers to fund the increased employers' pension costs.

The Treasury previously met the additional 7% employers' pension contribution, and when this ended deaneries were not provided with adequate funding for this purpose. Unfortunately, the Department of Health is unwilling to cover the increased costs incurred by trainers. While the new general medical services (nGMS) contract agreement did not cover GP trainers, the nGMS contract agreement covered responsibility for employers' superannuation contributions on all NHS income they receive, which the Department holds includes the trainer's grant.

The GPC understands the frustrations of trainers on this.
