Foundation year 2 (FY2) trainees on a general practice placement
November 2007
Foundation year 2 (FY2) trainees undertaking a work placement in general practice should be seconded by a “host” Trust (the employing Trust) to the practice. The arrangement should be formalised by a letter from the Trust to the FY2 trainee (and copied to the GP practice) confirming that it is a secondment.
A secondment will mean that the “host” trust will remain the employer of the FY2 trainee with the FY2’s contract of employment remaining with the trust. As such the trust will continue to be responsible for the FY2’s pay, holiday booking, maternity/paternity leave, disciplinary and grievance procedures, travel expenses etc as per the terms of the employment contract with the trust. At the end of the placement the FY2 trainee will return to the host trust employer. The NHS Indemnity, through the trust employer, will cover the FY2 trainee during their GP placement.
We would also recommend that a service level agreement should be in place between the host trust and the GP practice to confirm the arrangements and ensure a grant/payment to the practice is forthcoming.
Committee of General Practice Education Directors (COGPED) has confirmed that the content of this guidance is correct.
