General support, advice and self-help groups
A huge number of web sites exist providing advice and support to disabled people. These vary in quality and coverage. This section contains links to some of the broadest internet resources.

Access-ability
UK site covering disability issues. Provides useful information, articles, links, classified adverts and details of a range of disability travel companies.

Assist UK
leads a UK wide network of locally-situated Disabled Living Centres. Each centre includes a permanent exhibition of products and equipment that provide people with opportunities to see and try products and equipment and get information and advice from professional staff about what might suit them best.

The Association of Disabled Professionals (ADP)
draws on the expertise of disabled professionals to improve the educational and employment opportunities of disabled people.

The Brightside Trust
exists to help disadvantaged individuals by working to raise their achievement levels and by reducing the social barriers to their success. The Brightside Trust is a charity committed to creating educational opportunities. Their projects are designed to provide individuals with the confidence and skills they need to overcome social disadvantage.

Centre for accessible environments
is the UK's leading authority on inclusive design. They aim to help secure a built environment thatis usable by everyone, including disabled and older people.

Deaf Professionals Network
This website is primarily for d/Deaf Professionals who live in and around London. There is an archive section, which contains notes from meetings given by deaf professionals. The website can also be used as a resource for other deaf professionals who cannot attend the network meetings.

Depression Alliance
is the leading UK charity for people affected by depression. They work to relieve and to prevent this treatable condition by providing information and support services. They also campaign to raise awareness amongst the general public about the realities of depression.

Directgov
Directgov brings together the widest range of public service information and services online for disabled people.

Disability Alliance
provide advice to disabled people, their families, carers and professional advisers about social security benefit entitlement and other entitlements.

Disability employment advisory committee
is an Advisory Committee that gives independent, informed advice to Ministers and government policy makers about helping disabled people find and keep work. It is a Non Departmental Public Body (NDPB) sponsored by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

Disability Information and Advice Line (Dial UK)
is a national organisation for a network of 140 local disability information and advice services run by and for disabled people

Disability Information Services
free, confidential and impartial information on anything to do with living with impairments or conditions. This includes information on self-help groups, equipment, employment, holidays, education, benefits, recreation, access and transport.

Disability Now
UK site of campaigning newspaper, giving a range of useful information: articles, links, adverts and an archive on disability issues.

Disability UK
provides a gateway to information on disability related products, charities, information, benefits and health, with links to other sites.

Employers' forum on disability
is the world's leading employers' organisation focused on disability as it affects business. Funded and managed by over 400 members, we make it easier to recruit and retain disabled employees and to serve disabled customers.

European Disability Forum
a European umbrella organisation representing more than 37 million disabled people in Europe. Its mission is to ensure disabled citizens' full access to fundamental and human rights through their active involvement in policy development and implementation in the European Union.

a leading charity provider of care and support to disabled people, both in the UK and in more than 50 countries around the world.

Linking Education and Disability (LEAD) Scotland
is a voluntary organisation set up to widen access to learning for all disabled young people and adults and carers across Scotland.

Long Term Conditions Alliance
an umbrella body for national voluntary organisations working to meet the needs of people with long-term health conditions.

MDF The BiPolar Organisation
is a user-led charity working to enable people affected by bipolar disorder (manic depression) to take control of their lives.

Mencap
is the UK's leading learning disability charity working with people with a learning disability and their families and carers.

The Mental Health Foundation
provides information, carries out research, campaigns and works to improve services for anyone affected by mental health problems, whatever their age and wherever they live.

National Association of Disability Practitioners(NADP)
is the professional organisation for disability and support staff in further and higher education. NADP is for anyone working in the post-16 education sector and involved in the management or delivery of services for students with disabilities.

National Phobics Society
works to relieve and support those living with anxiety disorders by providing information, support and understanding via an extensive range of services, including 1:1 therapy services.

The Rowan Organisation
is an organisation of disabled people which provides disabled people with access to information, services and resources in order to increase their opportunity for independence and enable them to make informed choices about their future.

Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation (RADAR)
a UK organisation run by and working for disabled people. RADAR campaigns for equal rights for disabled people and provides information and advice on issues relating to disability. The site lists disability contact groups.

Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB)
are the UK’s leading charity offering information, support and advice to over two million people with sight loss.

Royal National Institute for the Deaf (RNID)
aims to make daily life better for deaf and hard of hearing people through campaigns, information, services and support of scientific and technological research.

Samaritans
provides confidential no-jundgemental support, 24 hours a day for people experiencing feelings of distress or dispair, including those which could lead to suicide.

SANE
uses its helpline 'SANEline' to reach many more people affected by mental conditions, their families and friends. Through the use of regular anonymised surveys of its users, SANE is in a prime position to understand both what is required and how to deliver it.

The United Kingdom's Disabled People's Coucnil (UKDPC)
The United Kingdom's Disabled People's Council is the UK's national organisation of the worldwide Disabled People's Movement. They represent some 70 groups run by disabled people in the UK at national level.

UK Health Professionals with Hearing Loss
aims to provide information for and create a network of UK health professionals with hearing loss

UK Self Help
provides the telephone numbers of over 760 UK self help groups and over 600 hyperlinks.

YoureAble.com
internet based news and information service for disabled people and those with an interest in disability issues.
