Many senior doctors look forward to the day they will retire, but when it happens, many are left feeling lost and unfulfilled. Doctors’ whole identity is frequently enmeshed with being a doctor. If you ask a doctor what they do, they don’t answer; I heal the sick or I diagnose disease, they say, ‘I’m a doctor’. When this aspect of their lives ceases, some doctors struggle to come to terms with retirement. But with some planning and forethought this process can be enjoyed and celebrated. This course is now RCP CPD accredited.

This workshop takes a reflective approach and covers the four stages of career planning:

Stage 1: Who am I?
Using specific career exercises, you will be able to understand who you are. You will understand:
  • What the key themes are from enjoyable events in your life; and
  • Gain a better understanding of your present situation.
Stage 2: What do I want?
Using further career exercises, you will be able to:
  • Produce ideas for your future life; and
  • Identify later in life goals and so decide what you want to achieve in the different areas of your life.
Stage 3: What is stopping me? What can help me?
Using career exercises, you will be able to identify:
  • Any attitudes blocking you from making a decision; and
  • Assess those factors which can help or hinder progress towards your goals and achievements.
Stage 4: What are my next steps?
Using career exercises, you will be able to:
  • Be aware as possible of the risks to you and other people close to you of any proposed course of action; and
  • Be more aware of those activities which can support you in making and adjusting to a change.
