Guidance for PMETB applicants

February 2006

Introduction
This guidance note is aimed at SAS doctors who are considering applying for Specialist Registration, to the Postgraduate Medical Education and Training Board via Article 14 of the General and Specialist Medical Practice (Medical Education, Training and Qualifications) Order 2003 (the Order).

If you are considering applying to the PMETB for Specialist Registration we strongly recommend that you read the guidance posted on the PMETB website along with the frequently asked questions. This guidance can be found at http://www.pmetb.org.uk/

The BMA’s Staff and Associate Specialist Committee has produced this guidance in response to enquiries from individuals on how to apply for entry onto the Specialist Register via Article 14. This guidance is not intended to replace the guidance produced by PMETB. We hope that you find the information helpful.

This guidance explains what the advantages are, and other reasons for, gaining access to the Specialist Register and sets out where to find help with the application process, including how to present the application and possible pitfalls to avoid. This guidance also highlights possible areas of concern for SAS doctors which are being addressed by the SAS Committee.
