More and more nowadays, medical practitioners are finding themselves dealing with challenging management issues and there are many occasions where medical managers may find themselves in challenging situations and need to call on their negotiation skills. Added to this, medical managers are finding the need to become more commercially aware. This workshop is RCP CPD accredited.

Dealing with challenging situations and negotiating skills
a) Basic conflict management strategies
- Understanding the causes and effects of conflict
- Techniques for defusing conflict situations
- Methods for resolving conflict
- Recognising personality types and how this may have an impact on how you deal with different situations and people who have different personalities to yourself.

b) When do you need to negotiate?
- Looking at the situations in which you might have to negotiate (e.g. selling/procurement, disputes, salary discussions)
- Identifying the different conditions and starting positions of the negotiating parties.

c) Different approaches to negotiation
- Exploring competitive and collaborative negotiation methods and recognising which methods are appropriate to specific situations
- Cultural perspective on negotiation skills

d) Preparing for negotiations
- Understand what background research will help to strengthen your negotiating position
- Developing your own negotiating strategy and anticipating that of the other parties

e) Negotiating in practice
- Develop practical techniques for dealing with common negotiation scenarios
- Examine how the theories work in practice
- Discuss your own situations
- Practical exercises in small groups so you have the chance to put the theory into practice

Commercial awareness and networking for professional development
As you progress through your medical career and into a management and strategic role, there is a greater need to be more commercially aware. This session considers how to identify opportunities and test their viability within a public sector environment like the NHS. This is an interactive session where you will get the chance to work in small groups.

Networking for professional development will consider how to build effective business relationships.
Session will include;
- What is networking?
- Misconceptions of networking
- Why network?
- Building your network
- Making and developing contact

Feedback received

Yet another excellent training course provided by the BMA. The small group sessions were chaired by highly experienced negotiators and concentrated on developing the representatives' current knowledge and skills to become more effective in high level negotiations. The course focussed on the importance of team building, ways of resolving conflicts and understanding the psychology behind different types of behaviours used in negotiations and how to respond to counter productive tactics. Overall, this was a very intensive course, expertly run with seamless organisation and I have no hesitation in recommending it to all doctors who are involved with LNC's’
