Introduction
The International Federation of Sports Medicine uses the most satisfactory of the many definitions of sports medicine:
"Sports medicine embodies theoretical and practical medicine which examines the influence of exercise, training and sports, as well as lack of exercise, on healthy and unhealthy people of all ages to produce results that are conductive to prevention, therapy, and rehabilitation as well as beneficial for the athlete himself." (The Oxford Illustrated Companion to Medicine, by Lock S, Last J M, Dunea G. Oxford Univ. Press, 2001)

Medicine and sport science
Karger, ISSN 0254-5020
Inaugurated at a time when the sports sciences were separated from medicine. From the first volume on, the editors have united these two areas in order to bridge the gap between medicine and sport science and to give the scientific community at large, and biomedical researchers in particular, the full benefit of current advances being made in the multifaceted domains of sports medicine. Contributions from biomechanics, biochemistry, morphology, engineering, and from different areas of clinical medicine are incorporated.
