The BMJ's picture researcher maintains a small collection of colour transparencies of various activities (Southampton General Hospital) and a larger collection from Newcastle Infimary. These are available for use in slide presentations or medical book use although commercial use is not permitted. If authors want to use pictures for their own titles, published by another publisher, a reproduction fee is charged according to the style of the publication. There is a small charge to cover administrative time.

This database of nearly 5 000 images can be searched by keyword, decade or subject. It comprises photographs, prints and other images in the BMA archive although not all items in the collection are on the database. It includes photos of BMA officers; other medical personalities; pictures of BMA house; BMA events including annual meetings; and photographs of general medical and social interest. The images date from the 16th century to the present. The collection is used both in-house, by BMJ marketing and BMA News, and by external researchers. There is no research or use fee although reproduction is charged for. The BMA marketing and publications department will make reproductions or slides from images for BMA members.
