Call for entries to the BMA Patient Information competition - printed materials and websites

30 October 2006

Did you or any of your colleagues produce any new patient information resources last year? The 2007 patient information competition is now open for entries and we hope you'll want to enter your new booklets and websites. This long-standing award receives regular entries from both patient groups and patient information advisers in hospitals, but there are a lot of excellent patient information resources which have been produced by staff in UK hospitals and we'd like to encourage more entries from hospitals and trusts.

We award two general prizes, one for printed materials and one for websites, but we also award highly commended and commended certificates too. In September this year, nearly one hundred patient information specialists were invited to the awards ceremony at BMA House to receive their certificates.

We also give special prizes for materials aimed at people with learning disabilties and at materials aimed at young people, as well as a special prize for electronic resources.

There are six mandatory criteria for both Printed Materials and the Website awards.
  • Inclusion of date of publication and review date or last checked date
  • Involvement of patients in the content development and review in order to represent their views
  • Involvement of health professionals in the production of the leaflet
  • Clear statement of target readership
  • Accuracy of clinical information
  • Absence of spelling or grammatical mistakes
Our standards are high but, as long as publications meet these mandatory criteria, then they will be considered by the shortlisting panel. We choose a range of winners - from trust publications, to patient groups and to national charities - in order to acknowledge the wide variety of useful information which is produced in the UK.

The competition is free to enter and winners are invited to a prestigious awards ceremony and reception at BMA House.
