Finding the evidence course

This one-day practical course will give an overview of evidence-based healthcare, demonstrate a range of evaluated healthcare resources and tools for searching unevaluated resources, and introduce basic concepts of critical appraisal.
Who is it for?
- Doctors seeking evidence-based healthcare information for use in clinical practice
- Health librarians needing to search for evidence-based health information on behalf of their users
- Those needing to train fellow healthcare professionals in searching evidence-based resources.
What is covered?
- Defining evidence-based healthcare
- Focusing the search question using the PICO method
- Online sources of evidence (evaluated and unevaluated) with time to investigate them for yourself
- Basic critical appraisal skills.
We will assume you:
- have basic knowledge of Internet Explorer
- have basic experience of searching the MEDLINE database.
Location and times: BMA House, Tavistock Square, London, WC1H 9JP.
Registration 9.30am; start 9.45am; lunch 12.30 – 1.30 pm; end 4pm.
Cost: £180 +VAT(£211.50) (members); £360 +VAT(£423) (non-members). Lunch included.

Course objectives:
- At the end of the course you will:
- Understand the main concepts of evidence based healthcare
- Be able to formulate a search question using the PICO methodology
- Have translated a focused search question into a search strategy
- Understand the importance of the hierarchy of research evidence
- Understand the use of filters as search tools and have practiced with at least two examples
- Have investigated a range of evaluated sources of evidence
- Have investigated a range of non-evaluated sources of evidence
This course is subject to approval for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Royal College of Physicians for 5 CPD points.
