This paper states the position of the BMA's Junior Doctors Committee and the Trainees Committee of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges with regard to funding individualised study and professional development for today’s doctor in training.
The JDC has issued a report outlining a proposal for a new system of postgraduate training. The government in its medical workforce planning review (Improving Working Lives) and The NHS National Plan signalled that there needed to be improvements to the SHO grade. The JDC proposed the introduction of proper wide-based general professional training integrated with basic and higher specialist training.
This guide, written by the Junior Doctors Committee and the meeting of specialist trainee representatives, is aimed at junior doctors of all grades and will give trainees a clearer picture of the processes by which their postgraduate training and education are managed as well as an idea of how important these processes are for efficient and successful progress through training.
