The BMA welcomes the code of practice for NHS staff as a significant improvement on the Department of Health’s 1996 confidentiality guidance and is supportive of the general approach in the document. The BMA does have some specific concerns and comments however.
The Tool Kit is designed to act as a prompt to doctors when they are seeking consent by providing answers to common questions raised by this process. It consists of a series of cards relating to specific areas of consent such as providing treatment to children; consent and research; and obtaining consent for teaching purposes.
