Appointment to GP Specialty Registrar posts

Joint GPC/NHSE guidance on transitional arrangements
July 2007

With the introduction of new models of training under Modernising Medical Careers (MMC), a new single training grade has been introduced to cover all levels of post-foundation training in all specialties. GP Registrars will in future be known as GP Specialty Registrars, and where their pay is based on a pay point of an existing training grade they will in Specialty Registrar (StR) grade be able to access the full 10-point scale. Those doctors in existing training grades who have not transferred into the new grade before taking up a GP placement on or after 1 August 2007 will be assimilated on entry to the new placement; the process used will mirror that used to assimilate trainees into hospital posts in the new grade.

This guidance covers the principles of transition for foundation house officer 2s (FHO)2s and senior house officer (SHOs) into the StR grade during the transition period, and contains some examples to help clarify arrangements. The relevant payscales are contained in schedule 1 of the Directions to Strategic Health Authorities concerning GP Registrars, which have recently been amended. The full amended Directions can be accessed from the NHSE website.
