Challenges for doctors in the digital world

Tuesday 24 May 2005
BMA House, London

What is the conference about?

The planned shared care record has been a topical issue in recent months, and whether you think it is an opportunity or a challenge, it is something that is likely to have a significant impact on your daily working life and on your patients’ care.

This important conference hosted by the British Medical Association and supported by the Care Record Development Board (CRDB) aims to bring together doctors from all fields to clarify the facts from the fiction of the current plans, and to explore how best to maximise the benefits to patients and to doctors.

There will be opportunities to ask direct questions of the BMA and National Programme for IT in the NHS (NPfIT) representatives during the panel sessions and to participate in your choice of focused workshop with fellow doctors from across the medical field.

During the breaks you will be able to gain hands-on experience of different parts of the NPfIT systems with live demonstrations including: Choose and Book, Electronic Transmission of Prescriptions (ETP), Map of Medicine, GP to GP Transfer and Health Space.

Who is attending?

This event is open to all doctors from primary and secondary health sectors with an interest in exploring the future of patient care in a shared record environment.

Where does the conference take place?

The conference will take place at BMA House, Tavistock Square, London WC1H 9JP.

If you have any other questions please contact BMA conferences on 020 7383 6605 or email us confunit@bma.org.uk.

Workshop sessions:

The expert patient
The government’s agenda for greater patient choice and the informed patient will mean greater access to information for those being treated in the NHS. This workshop will explore the challenges and opportunities posed by this and how clinicians should respond.

Clinical safety
Patient safety is one of the key strands for the National Programme. This workshop will look at how the need for patient safety is being handled in the electronic environment and what areas need to be addressed.

Use of data for health service research
Access to more data and information of higher quality, as promised by the National Programme, will allow more and better research in health. This workshop will look at the challenges and opportunities this access will pose.

NHS Care Record guarantee
The NHS Care Record has implications for both confidentiality and security of patient data. This workshop will look at the work being carried out by the CRDB to address these issues.

Confidentiality: the BMA perspective
The new electronic era, as demonstrated by the National Programme for IT, has major implications for confidentiality of patient data. This workshop will look at the BMA’s new approach to the subject.

Challenges for the medical workforce in a digital environment
The new digital environment has implications for both staff development and education in the medical arena. This workshop will address the issues arising out of this new challenge.

Please note your workshop choice on the booking form and return as soon as possible, and not later than Friday 20 May 2005.
