Guidance for developing the role of medical directors
After a number of years of deliberation both under my chairmanship and that of my predecessor, Steve Evans, the Clinical and Medical Directors Subcommittee has updated the BMA’s guidance on Developing the role of medical directors. Because medical director roles are constantly adapting to new challenges and vary considerably from organisation to organisation the guidance will need to be adapted locally. In this edition we have taken the opportunity to reflect the increase in numbers of medical directors in primary care.
I hope that you will find this guidance useful whether you are a long-standing medical director or are simply considering the next step in your medical management career. As a supplement to this guidance we hope to issue further advice on the contractual arrangements you should enter into on taking up a medical director post. In the meantime, I would advise you to check with colleagues in similar organisations and to review our survey on medical managers’ pay available on the Clinical and Medical Directors pages of the BMA website on www.bma.org.uk/medicalmanagers
Finally, as we recognise that medical director roles are constantly evolving, we would welcome your comments on this guidance and, in particular, any areas where you believe further advice should be provided. If you have any personal concerns about your contract do contact askBMA on 0870 60 60 828 or via the BMA website.
Yours faithfully
Dr David Scott
