Delivering Academic Medicine conference, 7 December 2005

1 March 2006 Executive Summary
“Delivering Academic Medicine” was a conference held on 7 December to launch the BMA’s “Role Models in Academic Medicine” report and discuss the initiatives being taken forward in respect of medical academic research and careers. The conference also considered the future shape of undergraduate medical education, which, it was felt, had no comparable initiatives to drive it forward – it was felt this should be corrected;

First, the meeting heard about of the work of the International Campaign to Revitalise Academic Medicine (ICRAM), and five possible scenarios that could be used as strategic planning tools, outlined in this report;

Professor Sally Davies, Director of NHS R&D then outlined how the proposed new NHS R&D strategy was to be taken forward;

Dr Mark Walport, Director of the Wellcome Trust and Chair of the Academic Careers Sub-Committee of Modernising Medical Careers and the UK Clinical Research Collaboration gave an update on the progress made implementing the recommendations of their report on new academic training and career pathways;

Dr Peter Dangerfield, past-Chair of the BMA’s Board of Medical Education and Deputy Chair of the BMA Medical Academic Staff Committee outlined the issues facing medical education, to provoke a debate on a way forward for education on a par with the present research and careers initiatives.

A major outcome / objective of the conference was the discussion and feedback from the presentations, and the significant topics raised are outlined here in this report under suitable headings;

A list of conference attendees is included in appendix 1.
