Competency-based assessment - a discussion paper for consultants

This paper provides an overview of the current use of competency-based assessment in postgraduate medical education. It considers the limitations of a competency-based assessment system in relation to the standard of doctor produced and methods for assessing additional skills (beyond knowledge) required of a consultant or GP.

Areas where further development is required are also discussed. It has been produced by the BMA Medical Education Subcommittee of the Board of Science as a resource and reference tool for consultants. It may also be of use to SAS doctors, as their new contract includes mandatory portfolio keeping and 360 degree appraisal.
