Charitable donations by the BMA

The BMA’s Council has authorised the Finance Committee to consider and, where appropriate, authorise donations on its behalf. The Finance Committee has established a Charitable Purposes Subcommittee to consider requests for charitable donations and this subcommittee will meet on two occasions each year, although may hold an emergency (possible virtual) meeting if emergency applications are received. This subcommittee comprises the BMA’s President, Treasurer and two members of the Finance Committee. All requests for charitable donations which are received by the Association will be remitted to this subcommittee and its timetable of meetings will be published on this website from time to time. The subcommittee held its first meeting in June 2005 and plans to meet again in the autumn.

Organisations who wish to request a charitable donation from the BMA are asked to complete a charitable donations application form in full and return it to Jacqueline Foukas at jfoukas@bma.org.uk.

The British Medical Association (BMA) may only make donations in accordance with and for the purposes specified in its objects which are set out in the Memorandum of Association. The BMA’s main objects are as follows:

1. To promote the medical and allied sciences, to maintain the honour and interests of the medical profession and to promote the achievement of high quality health care.
2. To hold or arrange for the holding of periodical meetings of the members of the Association and of the medical profession generally.
3. To circulate such information as may be thought desirable by means of a periodical journal, which shall be the journal of the Association, and by the occasional publication of transactions or other papers.
4. To grant sums of money out of the funds of the Association for the promotion of the medical and allied sciences in such manner as may from time to time be determined.

Therefore, requests for charitable donations will be referred to the relevant BMA department for comment and the advice of the Association's Legal Department will be sought when necessary.
