Careers coachingIndividual careers advice for doctors

Are you facing complex career issues and challenges? Are these impacting on your working life?

Career coaching might be just what you need.

Each coaching session is tailored to help you meet your specific career needs by working with a career coach or adviser on a one-to-one basis to clarify, explore, evaluate and respond with practical solutions to your career issues and challenges.

Your coaching session can cover whatever area you want to focus on, whether you require coaching on a particular career issue, one-to-one help on interview skills or presenting yourself effectively through your CV, The BMA have teamed up with C2 Careers, experienced medical career advisers, to provide you with this individual career advice at significantly discounted rates.

Spending time with a careers specialist provides you with the freedom to discuss and analyse your situation rationally, and in far greater depth than by talking to colleagues, or even friends or family. Your adviser is an impartial and independent guide, whose only stake in your career is their professional responsibility to help you manage and develop it.
How will it help?
The overall aim is always to help you make tangible progress in your career, although everyone’s objectives will undoubtedly be different.

What can you gain from careers coaching?
  • A chance to talk and be listened to
  • A clearer idea of what will really make the difference
  • A greater understanding of your potential
  • The identification and evaluation of potential options
  • A detached perspective on your ideas and plans
  • The chance to make important decisions
  • Practical ways forward to achieve your goals
  • The inspiration to act
What does it involve?
C2 Careers will tailor a careers coaching programme to meet your specific needs, and a typical structure consists of the following:

A ‘diagnostic’ session
This initial short discussion is usually conducted over the phone, and provides you with the opportunity to discuss your issues with a professional, who will clearly explain how career coaching can help you.

Your initial session
Your first session will focus on your career history, your current situation, what you hope to change about your career, and how we can help you to make that change, as well as what you can do before your next session in order to make the most of your valuable time.

A series of individually tailored, one-to-one consultations
If you choose to continue, you will have a series of in-depth discussions. Everyone’s needs vary, but a total of four sessions is the average. The focus of each session will also depend on what you want to get out of it:
  • Concrete and immediate – for example, helping you to plan a tailored job hunting strategy or working out how to get the information you need
  • Reflective and profound – for example, uncovering reasons for your dissatisfaction with your job, or exploring self-defeating patterns of behaviour in your career management.

Feedback on one-to-one coaching session

‘Thank you for the feedback and all your help. It was very useful, I'm sure I'll be using your services again..’
