More than one million patients sign to support surgeries

GP leader Laurence Buckman was met with a standing ovation when he revealed that 1,236,085 patients had backed the BMA Support your Surgery campaign.

More than 400 GPs from across England rose to their feet and applauded the GPs leader when he made the announcement as part of his opening address to the BMA annual conference of local medical committees in London this morning (12/06/08).

He told delegates: ‘My message to [prime minister] Gordon Brown is this: whatever you think of GPs, take note of what your electorate thinks.

BMA GPs committee chair Dr Buckman is due to deliver the petitions to 10 Downing Street later today.
