About the BMA in Wales

November 2004
The British Medical Association is the professional organisation and trade union for doctors in the UK. Across the UK more than three out of four practising doctors, and the majority of medical students, are members. The BMA office in Cardiff supports nearly 5,500 members from every branch of the medical profession in Wales.

The BMA in Wales has recently moved to prestigious new offices at Caspian Point in Cardiff Bay, close to the National Assembly for Wales. The previous BMA Welsh House at 1 Cleeve House, Lambourne Crescent, Llanishen, Cardiff, was opened by the Rt Hon David Hunt MBE MP, Secretary of State for Wales (at that time), on 9th December 1991. However, there has been a BMA Welsh House in Cardiff since 4th November 1955, which was at 195 Newport Road, Cardiff.

The recent transfer of functions to the National Assembly for Wales in the form of devolution has been welcomed by BMA Cymru Wales as an opportunity to develop strong and constructive relationships with Assembly Members and to contribute to decision making for the benefit of the NHS in Wales.

As the voice of the medical profession BMA Cymru Wales communicates the profession's collective views on a wide range of subjects to politicians, the public and the press.

Doctors are represented through the BMA's craft committees and it's Welsh Council, which consist of:

These committees meet regularly to consider issues affecting the medical profession and patient healthcare. BMA representatives take forward issues in discussion and negotiation with the National Assembly for Wales, the five health authorities and the Trusts.

Throughout Wales the BMA has an established network of local negotiating committees (LNCs) in each Trust, and BMA representatives ensure that the interests of doctors are protected in negotiations on terms and conditions of services through these LNCs.
