The Rt Hon Patricia Hewitt MP, Secretary of State for Health, addressed doctors at the BMA’s annual conference today, 27 June 2005, at the Manchester International Convention Centre (MICC). It is the first time that a Secretary of State has attended the BMA’s annual meeting.

Questions to the Secretary of StateMs Hewitt delivered a short speech to the conference followed by a question and answer session from the floor. Questions posed by the representatives included smoking in enclosed public places, recruiting doctors from overseas, primary care and accident and emergency targets.

More than 170 questions were submitted to the chairman. He has pledged to send those which could not be put to the Secretary of State today to the Department of Health and Ms Hewitt said she would see they were responded to. The answers will be put on the website for members to see.
